Heard on Dude Weekend

"When I find myself laughing at How I Met Your Mother, I worry that I'm losing my cynical edge."

I need to revise that statement, as I need to do with most of the things in my life.

Its pretty easy to dismiss how I met your mother as another one of CBS insipid, puerile productions, most of which can immediately be labeled an epic and comprehensive fail. Mention david spade and rules of engagement and watch the little blood vessles in my eyes burst. But for some reason how i met your mother is a little different. It oscillates so quickly between something really funny and clever and something cringingly stupid that it has to be choreographed. I almost imagine there are two writers- one who is really funny, the other a CBS company man. The funny guy writes a joke, and is compelled to follow it up immediately with a sop to the hungry man-eating, suv-driving idiot who year after year makes cbs "america's most watched network."

Or maybe this is how the dream dies. One day youre chuckling at a few jokes on how i met your mother, the next your rolling with laughter through the 22 glorious minutes of two and a half men.

I read a comic strip that, after the character realized in the future he ran a dental practice in the burbs and was not a Rock God, said: "A compromise here, a Republican vote there -- pretty soon you're driving a mini-van and sporting a comb-over."
